Refreshing Your Spirit
Everyone needs a spiritual tune-up from time to time, says Bernie Siegel, M.D., author of 365 Prescriptions for the Soul. When life throws you a curve ball, such as a illness or money troubles, it's easy to feel disconnected from your faith. When he needs a little inspiration, he says, he looks for a sigh: 'For me the most significant sign is a penny. Its value is in the message, not the materialism."
The face of a penny contains three messages: The word Liberty reminding us we are all free to be ourselves. The image of Abraham Lincoln, facing forward which reminds us to accept our mortality and live in the moment. And above all is the phrase "In God we trust!" Each time Siegel finds a penny, he picks it up and spends a moment thinking about those ideas.
When he collects 100 pennies he buys a lottery ticket, with the promise that if he wins he'll use the money to do good in the world. "I think of the found coins as pennies from heaven-crumbs left for someone to follow home." he says. "it's an uplifting experience."

The song 'Pennies from Heaven'
"Pennies from Heaven"
A long time ago
A million years BC
The best things in life
Were absolutely free.
But no one appreciated
A sky that was always blue.
And no one congratulated
A moon that was always new.
So it was planned that they would vanish now and then
And you must pay before you get them back again.
That's what storms were made for
And you shouldn't be afraid for
Every time it rains it rains
Pennies from heaven.
Don't you know each cloud contains
Pennies from heaven.
You'll find yor fortune falling
All over town.
Be sure that your umbrella is upside down.
Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers.
If you want the things you love
You must have showers.
So when you hear it thunder
Don't run under a tree.
There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me.

"Find a penny, pick it up. If it 'heads' you'll have good luck!"
Found a penny under a toy as I climbed into my friend Audrey's car sharing a ride to a meeting. I said 'Great...a penny from heaven'. Audrey shared that whenever she finds a penny if it's not 'heads up' she'll place the penny 'heads up' as this means 'good luck' and leave it there for someone else to find. How sweet is that!
My good luck was getting to know Audrey better as we had the best conversation ever to and from the meeting. God is so good.

Ben's penny story
Last night at our prayer and share group, a few of us started talking about pennies. Pamela shared a precious one and I'm calling it Ben's penny story.
Many years ago at a Bible Study, my friend Pamela shared that a man in the group, Ben shared this penny story...
Holding a penny in his hand Ben said "one side of a penny says what we must do, 'in God we trust' He turned over the penny and said 'the words on the other side remind us that there was one cent...in other words...there was one sent from God.
I just love this! Thank you Ben where ever you are these days.
We wouldn't have eternal life without God giving/sending His son to pay a debt He didn't owe.

The Penny
You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels...This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.
Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.
The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.
As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.
Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.
He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?
Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection , and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.
A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?
"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says." She read the words "United States of America." "No, not that; read further." "One cent?" "No, keep reading." "In God we Trust?" "Yes!: "And?" "And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin."
Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!
When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust." and had to laugh. Yes, God I get the message.
It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient...
